Tools for Guest Room Tycoons

As taken from the September 2006 issue of Success Magazine. Please view the attached PDF version. To see all the products that I recommended in this article.

Tools for Guest Room Tycoons Whether you’re starting your own business or just want to put in extra work at home, you need a fully-functioning base for your operations. Figuring out what equipment you need can be difficult. Here’s a list to help you make the most out of your space. Consider Your Computer If you want to travel light, try the Lenovo ThinkPad X60s (starting at $2210). Weighing in at 3.5 pounds, with a four-hour battery life, the device has three USB ports, a FireWire port, and an SD card slot. It is also available as a tablet PC, which allows you to write directly on the screen. For optimal performance, the three aspects to consider are processor, RAM, and hard drive space. In all three cases, bigger is better. If you don’t want to wade through the specs yourself, go for the maxed-out HP dv8000t. It runs around $2700, but includes a 2.16GHz Centrino Duo processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 240GB hard drive, and a complete three-year warranty. Gadgets and Gizmos: Printing, scanning, copying, and faxing: You can now combine them with the HP OfficeJet 9130 All-in-One ($999). For your phone, try a Palm Treo 700 ($399). It syncs up with your computer, and it even supports mobile broadband so you can check your e-mail on the go. USB flash drives are an easy way to backup and transfer. The SanDisk Cruzer Micro 1GB drive ($70) will work with both Windows and Macintosh computers. Have a backup battery and external hard drive for your computer on hand. We like USB-powered portable drives, such as the WD 120GB Passport ($200). At Home in Your Office A home office is somewhere you must be comfortable working. You’re going to need a good chair-look for comfort and support. Make sure all of your hardware’s cords are accessible but out of the way. And don’t forget to decorate, both for comfort and for your image when clients come to your office. LAWRENCE BRENNER
